Selection Process

Selection Process for the National Famine Commemoration

The annual National Famine Commemoration revolves between the four provinces of Ireland. A new selection process was introduced in 2012 to determine future locations of the National Famine Commemoration. A sub-committee of the National Famine Commemoration Committee assesses and evaluates each submission received in accordance with agreed standard criteria. When the sub-committee has completed its assessment of the proposals submitted, it makes its recommendations to the National Famine Commemoration Committee. When the National Famine Commemoration Committee has agreed the site, Minister Humphreys announces the location.

In the context of the Irish Diaspora and the International Famine Commemoration, the National Famine Commemoration Committee has considered how this aspect of the Famine might appropriately be recognised and the contributions of those who emigrated and of their many descendants abroad, appropriately celebrated. When it was first established, the committee agreed that an International Famine Commemoration would be held annually. Interested parties abroad can submit proposals, generally in conjunction with the relevant Irish Embassy/Consulate, recommending a particular location for consideration to the National Famine Commemoration Committee.
